Track One: Rebirthing... it feels good to actually be writing this Walk TRu... this is an album that i've played many many times since i first received it in the mail a month or so ago... here's the thing... since i write a lot of album reviews and such, i get a lot of albums sent to me... i can seriously count the times i get so excited about an album that i have to listen to it right away... i'm not entirely certain why, but this was one of those albums... and as i could tell by the opening strains of this opening song... it was impatience that was mercifully rewarded with a great bit of music to listen too... this opening track leads off by picking up the listener where Collide left off... a very organic mix of strings and piano and elements of rock guitars, great, full sound... it's on, my friend... it's on... Track Two: The Last Night... early on, this was one of my favorite tracks on the album... it starts out nice and slow with the piano intro and progresses into a nice well-rounded sound with John and Korey trading vocals through the verses... it's also a pretty powerful song because of the lyrical content... it's dealing directly with the "fad" of cutting... which is something that's gotten a lot of coverage in the news, but has largely been ignored by Christians... the song offers Christ as the alternative to cutting or suicide which is hinted at here... it's pretty cool... Track Three: Yours to Hold... this one's a stripped down ballad that's pretty much just John and an acoustic guitar for a lot of it... the first verse is really toned down and it doesn't progress too much, but the second verse he takes it up an octave... i love how the verses lead up to the chorus and there's a dramatic pause before the song continues... the touches of orchestra throughout is really nice too... now i'm up on the bridge and that works really well to extend the song a bit, give it a little more texture and then a half step up and the chorus leads us out... it's a nice song that shows the tender side of John's vocals... Track Four: Better Than Drugs... for some reason, when i initially wrote down the track order, i put this one too early... kind of strange... but anyway... this is definitely "Yours to Hold"... this song is ramping the tempo back up to speed for the rest of the album... not exactly a heavy heavy sound, but a definite harder rock feel to it... nice use of guitars with again, little touches of piano throughout... and the layering of sounds is just beautiful to be honest... not too many more ways to say it actually... nice little guitar solo going on right now... and the bridge which has the instruments all but stripped out... very nice song... kind of middle of the road as far as energy and whatnot, but it's definitely a keeper... Track Five: Comatose... yes... this is a pretty strong rock tune... again leading with the strings and such with a great intro building up steam only to drop out for the first verse and build back up... lots of energy here and it's a definite strong single candidate... i'm totally digging the vocals on this one... i have to say though, and this is probably because i'm so familiar with the song now, but it's not really hitting me as hard as it used to... like say the first forty times i listened to it... oh i love this part... about 2:40 into the track... brilliant way to get me back into the song on the umpteenth time through... it still gets me swinging my head to the rhythm... good song... Track Six: The Older I Get... turning down the heat a bit again... this song has a nice driving tempo to it... and i like the overall feel of it... it definitely feels more like a generic rock ballad or anthem than the rest of the album thus far... almost like it's primed for the radio or for some movie or television show... i definitely enjoy it... i mean, hey, i'm getting older every day and more aware of that... but i'm just saying is all... it's not a bad thing... it's just a different vibe than some of the more aggressive tracks... anyway... "wiiiiiiish it didn't hurt like this"... time to get some more water... back in a flash...
*** INTERMISSION (maybe it's cheating but i'm falling behind on this typing and i need to go stretch) *** Track Seven: Those Nights... ah... nothing like crisp pure water... this part of the Walk TRu is brought to you by my Nick Tahou's cup and the fresh water from our water cooler... anyway... this song kind of builds on the last... it's kind of a bummer to split them up, but such is the way of life... still has a bit of an anthem rock feel with some broad chord sweeps on the guitar, some big riffs that make you slam your head down with the beat and lyrics that speak of better days... oh i love this part... oddly enough it's just about 2:40 into the track again... but it's a spotlight on the guitars and the riffs and it's just brings the track to a halt before the big send off... i remember my high school and college days when we had scenes much like described in this song... miss you guys... Track Eight: Falling Inside the Black... and here's were we get a little more serious with the aggression... John's got a little bit of screaming going on... Korey jumps in on the chorus here and the music just feels harder, edgier, like it has a different purpose... well, more like it's conveying a different emotion... this song took a while to grow on me actually... but i like it just fine nowadays... hmmm... someone outside my window just pulled over to drop off a mail parcel and it looks like she locked herself out of her car... that's gotta be a bummer... i think the car's still running to... good thing for cell phones and "honest" locksmiths who can break into your car within seconds... stinks to have to pay for that though... Track Nine: Say Goodbye... okay... so after that brief departure from the stadium, anthematic, big melody and wave your hands in the air rock music... maybe that's why i didn't initially like "Falling inside the Black" ... anyway, we're back... this one is perhaps... the biggest example of said rock songs... it's like one of those songs you don't want to admit that you like, but everytime it plays you sing along as if you're up on stage with thousands of fans screaming the lyrics back at you... well i'm sure some people do that kind of thing... i think i'd call this vintage rock since it's kind of like a throwback to the eighties when it was popular to do that kind of thing... hey, now it sounds kind of fresh again... Track Ten: Whispers... and it all leads up to this song... my goodness... this song was featured in the background of some of those sneak peak in studio videos off of the Skillet website... and it's about a hundred times better sonically here on the album... you're lying to yourself if you don't admit that you just rock out to this track as it plays... this is such a hot song and it's slowly emerged as my favorite track on the album... just a great rhythm to it... just a great rock feel... and hey, do you hear that SWEET guitar solo going on right there?... i love it... and the interplay on the chorus between the vocals and the percussion? phenomenal... i can't get enough of this track right here... unfortunately it's one of the shortest song the album... Track Eleven: Looking for Angels... woah, where did that rain come from... i guess it did get pretty dark... at least the locked-out lady seems to be back in her car and headed back home or where ever she was headed... this is the last night... i mean song... on the album and it's pretty unique... John is just talking over the track for the verses... in a poetic kind of way not like a rap vocal... and it works pretty well... it's a nice track that talks about a lot of issues that we face in life... i guess the downside is that people might not keep up with what he's saying and might miss the message... but it's pretty powerful... definitely worth paying attention to... this last verse talks about how we need to be angels to those around us who are in need... nice job... and yikes... since it's the last verse on the last song... i need to get my last thoughts in... do not sleep on this album... it's definitely one of my favorites this year... thanks for walking with me... keep it locked...
Back once again with a new spin on the rock sound that has made fans come swarming, it's Skilet with Comatose. Building on Collide and reaching back through the years to incoporate some of the band's early influences, the result is a sound that is full, pleasing and worth checking out.
